Preventing Boredom in Your Dog

It often seems that dogs are content to lay around and sleep the day away. While they do enjoy relaxing, they also require mental stimulation to stay happy and out of trouble. When dogs become bored, they often become destructive. This may include knocking over the trash, chewing on your favorite shoes, scratching furniture, barking or whining excessively, or pawing at you to get your attention.

Keeping your dog active and engaged throughout the day can help them to find balance and minimize their mischievous behaviors. Here are a few ways to relieve your dog’s boredom:

Play with Them

Devote some time to rigorously playing with your dog so they can burn off some energy. Throw a ball or frisbee, go for a run or bike ride, or play tug of war. Encourage them to be active for more than just 5 or 10 minutes. Doing this first thing in the morning can let them get their energy out so they’ll be calmer during the day. Do the same in the evening for a more restful night.

Challenge Their Mind

Dogs like to be challenged and stimulated. Get some food puzzles or make your own so your dog has to work to get pieces of dog food or small treats. Hide food under tennis balls in a muffin tin so they have to move the balls to find the treats. Put a few pieces of kibble in an empty water bottle and let them figure out how to shake the bottle to get the food out. Stuff a Kong toy with peanut butter and let them get to work. There are also plenty of puzzle mats and other mentally stimulating toys you can find online. Change it up to keep things interesting for your dog.

Train Them

Another great way to stimulate your dog’s mind is to teach them new commands or tricks. They enjoy the challenge of practicing and being rewarded. It keeps their mind focused to do what you are asking or showing them. It is also an effective way of promoting and reinforcing desired behaviors. Have fun with it and see what your dog is capable of doing.

Socialize Them

Just like humans, dogs are social creatures. They like being around other dogs and people as well. Go for walks in the park so they can enjoy the different scents and people. Take them to the dog park so they can run around with other dogs, playing and having fun. Sign them up for doggie daycare so they’re not home alone all day while you’re working. Even if you work from home, doggie daycare can be a good option so you can work in peace and your dog can have fun, socialize with others, and get out their energy.

Keeping your dog active – physically and mentally – can create a more enjoyable relationship and help keep them out of trouble.
